The Institute of Agricultural Sciences at ETH Zurich, Chair of Grassland Sciences (Prof. Nina
Buchmann), seeks 2 Ph.D. students in fog and dew process research.
Our SNF funded research project “The importance of fog and dew for Swiss grasslands today and in the future” offers two Ph.D. student positions. Position (1) will have a focus on atmospheric physics and the meteorological aspects of the research topic, whereas position (2) has its focus on stable isotope and plant-level ecohydrological aspects.
Ph.D. (1) will be responsible for a small network of dew and fog balances to be installed in grasslands across Switzerland together with visibility sensors for the detection of fog. Interest in geostatistical upscaling and in-depth understanding of atmospheric and micrometeorological processes leading to fog and dew deposition will be required. Ph.D. (2) will be responsible for stable isotope measurements of δ2H and δ18O in gaseous and liquid water. He/she will be in charge of measurements with an optical absorption spectrometer (for gaseous water). Basic experience in plant physiological field measurements (stomatal conductance and leaf water potential) will be beneficial. Field work will be done as a team.
We look for two dynamic, reliable and highly motivated students with a M.Sc. degree in agricultural or environmental sciences, micrometeorology, ecophysiology, physics or related disciplines. Both Ph.D. students should be enthusiastic to carry out demanding field work during intensive campaigns with nocturnal and early morning measurements. Technical interests and skills in working with scientific instrumentation outdoors will be beneficial. Driving license and English language proficiency are required. The research will be carried out within a 4-year project. We offer two interesting positions (100%) in an international, interdisciplinary research group in a lively university environment in Zurich as well as an international working experience. Salary and social benefits are provided according to ETH Zurich rules.
We look forward to receiving your online application including CV, copies of all Bachelor and Master certificates, transcripts and letter of motivation. Evaluation procedure will start 1st November 2017. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
