The country is also home to a less famous carbon storage powerhouse\u2014peatlands.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, <a href=\"https:\/\/bogday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Bog Day<\/a> is marked on 26 July to highlight the importance of peatlands. On 28 July this year, the Chilean Government, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpeatlands.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Peatlands Initiative<\/a>\u00a0(GPI) partners joined together online to celebrate these unique ecosystems, which are increasingly becoming known for their potential as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/unga\/our-position\/unep-and-nature-based-solutions\">nature-based solution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpeatlands.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Peatlands Initiative<\/a> is an effort by leading experts and institutions, including UNEP, to save peatlands as the world\u2019s largest terrestrial organic carbon stock and to prevent it being emitted into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EXDKQwiLGPI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"para_content_text\">\n<div>\n<p>\u201cChile is shifting the needle on climate action as they are prioritizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/unga\/our-position\/unep-and-nature-based-solutions\">nature-based solutions<\/a> for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/climate-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Climate Action commitments<\/a>. UNEP is bringing partners together to exchange best practices and to bring science to policymakers through the Global Peatlands Initiative,\u201d said UNEP peatlands expert Dianna Kopansky.<\/p>\n<p>Around three percent of Chile\u2019s surface is covered by peatlands, representing more than 2.3 million hectares and storing approximately 4.8 gigatonnes of carbon, which has been accumulating for over 18,000 years. This is almost five times more carbon than is stored in the aboveground biomass of all of Chile\u2019s forests combined. Two million hectares of peatlands lie in Chile\u2019s southernmost Magallanes region. The average depth of the peat bogs here is 5.5 metres, with some of them going down <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2020\/05\/20\/chile-recognizes-that-carbon-absorbing-peatlands-can-help-stem-effects-of-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12 meters<\/a>. However, the total area of peatlands across the country, including under native forests, as well as peatlands in the Ays\u00e9n region, has not yet been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2020\/05\/20\/chile-recognizes-that-carbon-absorbing-peatlands-can-help-stem-effects-of-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calculated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"para_content_text\">\n<div>\n<p>Tierra del Fuego, shared by Argentina and Chile, possesses the most southerly concentration of peatlands in the world, bringing together <a href=\"http:\/\/mires-and-peat.net\/media\/map14\/map_14_01.pdf%20and%20https:\/portals.iucn.org\/library\/sites\/library\/files\/resrecfiles\/WCC_2008_REC_125_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">groups of species that do not exist in any other place<\/a>. In fact, it hosts 95 per cent of Argentina\u2019s peatlands. On Chile\u2019s side of Tierra del Fuego, peatlands cover 90,000 hectares, mostly blanketed by precious carbon-capturing sphagnum moss.<\/p>\n<p>The main threats and impacts on peatland conservation in Tierra del Fuego are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drainage for \u00abland-clearance\u00bb for agricultural, forestry and livestock production (fires)<\/li>\n<li>Removing peat and mosses to use as a substrate (horticulture)<\/li>\n<li>Illegal extraction of peat and mosses<\/li>\n<li>The hydrological impact of invasive species like beavers (peatland drainage)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Peat in Chile is currently classified as a fossil resource under the country\u2019s Mining Code, compromising its carbon sequestration capacity and shifting peatlands from net carbon sinks into net carbon sources. There is a lack of knowledge about the importance of peatlands across all sectors in Chile. Despite this, a bill on environmental protection of peatlands is being considered by the Chilean parliament.<\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"td-animation-stack-type0-2\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.unenvironment.org\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/Chilean_Peatlands_1_Photo_by_Wildlife_Conservation_Society.jpg?null\" alt=\"Chilean Peatlands\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f064ec3b-f227-43be-9183-26489bb7588d\" \/><figcaption><em>Chilean peatlands. Photo by Wildlife Conservation Society<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ambitious plans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Government of Chile is planning a national inventory of peatlands in 2020-2021 and aims to include peatlands in its national greenhouse gas emissions inventory. In 2019, Chilean and international scientists called for peatlands to be included in the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\/nationally-determined-contributions-ndcs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nationally Determined Contributions<\/a>. Chile included peatlands in its Nationally Determined Contributions for 2020 and is developing a Chilean Peatland Strategy (supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society) that will contribute to its progress on multiple Multilateral Environmental Agreements.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-banner\">\n<div class=\"content_banner\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--highlight-box paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div>\n<p>UNEP and partners have also convened global forums like the<u> <a href=\"http:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/28480\/English.pdf?sequence=3&amp;isAllowed=y\">United Nations Environment Assembly resolution of March 2019: Conservation and sustainable management of peatlands<\/a><\/u>\u2014to raise awareness of peatlands and their role in <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpeatlands.org\/?p=16613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate action<\/a><\/u>, as well as for their benefits from biodiversity, water regulation and quality, and resilience.
