SANTIAGO, Aug 3 (Reuters) \u2013 A winter heat wave bringing historically high temperatures to Chile is a \u00abwindow\u00bb to an increasingly warm future, according to scientists.<\/p>\n

Globally, July was already the\u00a0hottest month on record<\/a>\u00a0and the first days of August brought a heat wave to parts of northern and central Chile, bringing springlike weather to the capital in the dead of the Southern Hemisphere winter.<\/p>\n

\u00abIn a way, this is a window into the future, we are seeing conditions that are going to normalize,\u00bb said Martin Jacques, a climatologist and professor at Chile\u2019s University of Concepcion. \u00abWhat now seems very extreme could gradually become more and more normal in a few years.\u00bb<\/p>\n

\u00abHaving temperatures of 37 degrees (99 degrees Fahrenheit) in the middle of southern winter is extraordinary,\u00bb said Raul Cordero, a climatologist at the University of Santiago. \u00abIt is a temperature anomaly of almost 15 degrees above typical values \u200b\u200band unfortunately it is not a local problem, it is a global problem.\u00bb<\/p>\n

Jacques said that while some of the temperature increase is expected during this time of the year due to atmospheric circulation, these extreme temperatures have been exacerbated by El Nino and an increasingly warming planet.<\/p>\n

He added that while it\u2019s often hard to establish a connection between extreme weather events and climate change, temperatures in parts of Chile have been breaking records year after year.<\/p>\n

\u00abIt\u2019s a pretty robust sign of warming,\u00bb Jacques said. \u00abThe connection between temperature and long-term climate change is much more evident.\u00bb<\/p>\n

The winter season has been eventful in Chile, with the most\u00a0intense rainstorms in decades<\/a>\u00a0leaving thousands homeless, isolated towns and blocked roads in the south-central area of the country.<\/p>\n

Many hope the rains would help the replenish the country\u2019s water reservoirs after more than a\u00a0decade-long drought<\/a>, but Jacques described the situation as \u00abquite fragile\u00bb as long as snow in the Andes isn\u2019t being replaced.<\/p>\n

\u00abWinter high-temperature events do affect the spring flow rate that can be expected from melt,\u00bb Jacques said.<\/p>\n
