Water and extremes: Adjoint Researchers

Professor in the Department of Ecological Sciences at the University of Chile. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maine, United States. His research combines paleoecological, geochemical, and glacial geoecological approaches to understand the western Patagonia region’s glacial history, vegetation, and climate. His current research aims to understand the behavior of southwestern Patagonian winds over the last 30,000 years and their potential role as a catalyst for recent global climate changes, characterizing the recurrence and sediment of ash associated with volcanic events and examining the response of vegetation and fire regimes to past climatic and non-climatic agents.

Land use change: Adjoint Researchers

Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences at Adolfo Ibáñez University. He studied Renewable Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Chile and obtained his Ph.D. in Natural Resources from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. His doctoral research used drones to detect invasive species in forests, species in grasslands, and underground carbon maps in peatlands. Currently, his research focuses on the relationship between plant functional traits and ecosystem processes (such as water and carbon cycles about climate change and land use), tree species invasion processes in post-fire areas, and the use of deep learning methods (such as Convolutional Neural Networks) in ecology.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. His research topics are in the field of biogeochemistry, specifically in processes related to organic matter decomposition, carbon release/accumulation, and the emission of trace gas fluxes to the atmosphere from different ecosystems (aquatic and terrestrial). He is also an associate researcher at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama.

Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Sciences and Technology at the University of Aysén. He holds a degree in Forest Engineering from the Austral University of Chile, a Master’s in Rural Development from ECOSUR, Chiapas, Mexico, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Ecosystem Restoration from the University of Alcalá de Henares, Spain. His main lines of research focus on studying forest ecosystem degradation processes from an empirical-holistic approach as a basis for defining restoration strategies in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation. He has also developed research associated with biodiversity conservation, ecological data modeling, landscape ecology, and the development of multi-criteria analysis methods to support environmental decision-making. He is currently an active member of the conifer specialist group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Resilient cities: Adjoint Researchers

Assistant Professor at Universidad Mayor. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Latin American Studies from UC San Diego, United States. She has a Master’s in Latin American Studies, a Master’s in Public Health from San Diego State University, United States, and a Ph.D. in Public Health from the University of Chile. She is an environmental epidemiologist interested in climate change, maternal and child health, and the importance of the first thousand days of life for developing well-being and health in the short and long term. Her most recent work focuses on air pollution from wood burning in southern Chile, its estimation, and how this long-term exposure is associated with the health of newborns.

Professor in the Department of Geophysics at the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, University of Chile. She obtained a Ph.D. in Chemical Meteorology from Stockholm University, Sweden. She was an expert advisor to the National Environmental Commission (CONAMA) between 1997 and 2001. From 2001 to 2012, she was an associate researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling. Her research lines are atmospheric modeling and data assimilation, air quality in megacities, and short-lived climate forcers. She was the first director of CR2 between 2013 and 2019. She was a lead author of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and is currently vice-chair of IPCC Working Group II.

She holds a Master’s and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences with a mention in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Her research line focuses on microbial ecology and biogeochemical cycles of extreme ecosystems, such as thermal systems, high Andean terrestrial systems, marine systems, and subpolar and polar cryosphere. Her interest lies in investigating how climatic factors exacerbated by climate change affect microbial communities’ diversity and activity.
